A Senufo maternity sculpture, from the region Korhogo, village M'Bengue, Ivory Coast, sitting on four legged stool, short feet, sturdy legs leading to prominent buttocks, on a belt the figure is wearing a carved loincloth, the abstract elongated torso is decorated with scarification marks, rounded powerful shoulders, the arms are long and angled, each upper arm and wrist is surrounded by two carved bangle, the hands are holding a lying child, notched back line, the slender neck with a neckless around it is supporting an elongated head, the protruding mouth is open, the nose is broad and connected with the eyebrows, outlined bulging eyes, the ears are set far back and have a crescent shape, further scarification marks on the face, the hairstyle crested with one braid hanging over the forehead, one on each side and one at the back of the head; heavy hard wood, dark brown to reddish patina, with traces of age and long lasting ritual use, several cracks.
