A Baule facemask, Ivory Coast, of the Kpan-type, heavy, hard wood in perfect Baule style. With a very finely carved hairstyle, a pointed mouth benaeath a slender elongated nose endimg up in high arched brows, the bulging sliteyes pierced through; reddish painted patina, incl. stand.
This well known mask is belonging to the “Goli masks”, that occur in the Baule in four different types in times of danger, diseases and burials to ward off evil and to exert a positive influence on supernatural powers.
