A Baule maternity sculpture (mater lactams), Ivory Coast, seated on a chair, elongated slender arms angled, holding a drinking child, hanging, tapering breasts, rounded shoulders, an ovoid head with a protruding mouth beneath a slender concave curved nose leading to high brows, downcast eyes, semi-circular ears, scarification marks all over the sculpture, fine grooved hairline, asymmetric headdress with an artificially designed hairstyle in striated manner; shiny red surface, partly eroded, traces of age and ritual use.
