Description

A couple of Baule masks, Ivory Coast, of hollow oval form, the male mask with a striated goatee, both masks have a pointed mouth, a flattened nose, pierced, heavy-lidded eyes topped by arched eyebrows, hemispherical ears with a triangle embedded in the middle, scarification marks on the cheeks, temples and above the bridge of the nose, the male mask embellished with scarification patterns close to the mouth, the female wears a striated, domed two parted coiffure, the male mask tapped by a diadem-like headdress, a ring encircling the chin of the female mask, both mask surrounded by a carved asymmetric zigzag line along the rim, pierced through at the rim for attachment; brown to reddish surface, traces of age and ritual use, incl. stand, provenance Amadou Bouaflé.
